The player takes on the role of Lex, a humble bookworm who goes on a quest through books in his library. A wide range of opponents will confront Lex on his journey, including characters from mythology and classic novels.

Unlike most fighting games, Bookworm Adventures uses spelling as the main combat mechanic! There is a grid of letter tiles at the beginning of each fight. With the available tiles, Lex spells out words that do damage based on the length of the word. Inflicting damage on Lex is the only thing enemies bother with; they simply attack. There are even some who destroy tiles, infect them so that they harm Lex, or "lock" them so that they are no longer usable.

Items and tiles with special properties create more complications. Special tiles have additional abilities such as reducing enemy damage, healing Lex, and doing automatic damage each turn. Words that are particularly impressive can earn you these gem tiles. Items Lex earns during his quest can also produce special effects, such as enhancing Lex's health, reducing his damage or causing special effects. Potions are one-shot items that heal Lex, power up his attacks or remove harmful conditions from him. For instance, the powerful Hand of Hercules increases damage when Lex spells the name of a metal, such as "TIN" or "BRONZE."
